Legends & Lattes | Travis Baldree

by | Mar 5, 2024 | Book Reviews

I will be honest with you. I am not entirely sure why I liked this book so much. The premise is simple: a battle-weary orc decides to retire from her mercenary life and settles down to start a coffee shop in a town that has never heard of coffee.

I bet a lot of fantasy lovers are like *blink* What? No battles? No magical artifacts? No action plots and bad guys?

Well, okay, actually, there is a battle (the prologue)…and a magical artifact…and gangsters who I would consider “bad guys.” But, correct, it’s not an action plot. It’s…slice-of-life fantasy, we’ll call it. It’s about this orc, Viv, her journey to open a coffee shop, and her struggles along the way.

But I still loved it. This book had me turning pages well past bedtime because there was just something compelling about it that made me not want to put it down.

Beyond that, this book was so refreshing. It’s a feel-good story with nothing too deep or difficult. I loved the hint of wonder that the fantasy elements and magic brought into the story. It was fun to see a story use these elements without the plot devolving into an epic battle (though I love a battle as much as the next person).

Like Viv, we are all weary at times. This book can be a fantasy novel to open up when you’re feeling stressed or exhausted and want the book you’re reading to just feel…safe. If this sounds like where you’re at, I highly recommend picking up Legends & Lattes!

Content:

Sexual: PG. Little to none. There is a smidge of LGBTQ content toward the end.

Violence: Well, the prologue is probably PG-13, but the rest of the book is PG.

Language: PG-13 or R? I do think there is quite a bit of language. (It’s been a bit since I read this book, so I don’t entirely remember.)
