It’s October, and to many people, that means it’s time for SCARY STUFF! I am not one of those people. Are you one of those people?
Well, this is easily the scariest book I’ve ever recommended, so go nuts all you Spooktober people. And don’t get me wrong—I LOVE this book!
John Cleaver is a teenager with sociopathic tendencies, and he’s doing his best not to become a serial killer. But when a murderer shows up in his sleepy small town and the police have no leads, John takes it upon himself to track the monster down–yes, I said monster.
This book is technically a supernatural thriller, but it’s also an urban fantasy. Dan Wells is one of my favorite authors. He has complex, emotionally resonant characters, snappy plots, and powerful themes. Basically, a complete package deal!
This is the first in a six-book series (that is also kind of two trilogies), but it stands very well alone. But I will tell you—the second one, Mr. Monster, was probably my favorite. I was listening to it on audio, and I was supposed to be doing an experiment in lab but instead I was just pacing back and forth because it was so thrilling.
Content Ratings:
Sexual content: PG. Really nothing more than hints of physical attraction. Later in the series there is a kiss.
Violence: PG-13. so…this is a monster book. While there are only a few violent scenes, the descriptions get a smidge gory. But! The first chapter is as gory as it gets (if my memory serves me correctly), so if you get through that, you should be good!
Language: PG. There might be a few swear words, but if so, they are infrequent and I don’t remember them.
Additional note: The main character does have sociopathic tendencies, and this is a thriller/horror. So while the content is technically clean, it gets a little scary at times.
